A look at Junie Browning and Scott Cornwell

junieandscottA Look At Junie Browning & Scott Cornwell

On November 28th, Browning & Cornwell will meet in the Big Show cage at the Belterra Casino Resort & Spa in Indiana. Now, we take a look at who they are and where they come from.

Scott Cornwell

Cincinnati, Ohio on June 28, 1983.  He started Tae Kwon Do at the age of three under Master David Huffstutler at Hamilton-Fairfield Tae Kwon Do.  As a teenager, Scott quickly progressed through the ranks, and even took 3rd place at the Jr. Nationals.  Scott currently holds a 3rd degree Black Belt under Master Huffstutler, and has competed in and won several local and national tournaments.  Scott also had a very impressive high school wrestling career where he competed for multiple national teams in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling.   Scott began his amateur mixed martial arts career in 2007 while training under 4th degree Black Belt, and MMA Instructor Rob Gerhardt at Hamilton-Fairfield Tae Kwon.  Scott won his first five amateur fights amassing an impressive record of 7-2, and the Lightweight Amateur Title at ICE Cage Fighting in Cincinnati, Ohio.  In preparation for his pro debut, Scott began additional training with Rod Housley at Team Vision while continuing to train and teach at Hamilton-Fairfield Tae Kwon Do.  Scott is a graduate of Fairfield High School and holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Miami University (Ohio).  Winning the majority of his fights by KO, or TKO, Scott is an excellent striker and wrestler who is also well versed in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Though Scott lost his recent amateur bout against 14-1 Chris Bennett, the fight was nearly ended a couple of times with Scott nearly getting a TKO win. Bennett was able to maintain composure and ultimately came out with an Arm Bar victory, but Cornwell made a lasting impression on Chris and the fans as a major threat. Eventually the two will rematch as pro's but in the meantime, keep your eyes on Cornwell as he certainly won't dissapoint.

Junie Browning

Junie BrowningJunie Browning was born in Florida and raised in Kentucky. He attended Bourbon County High School where he competed in football and the 160 lb (73 kg). division of wrestling. At the age of four, Browning began sparring with his brother to train for combat sports. Browning trained with Four Seasons MMA under Mike O'Donnell; then moving to Las Vegas, NV and is now training with Xtreme Couture. As of November 3, 2008, Browning is a part of the Xtreme Couture team. His younger brother, Rob Browning, fights for the Lexington-based organization American Fight League.

Browning was a fighter on The Ultimate Fighter reality show. In his elimination bout, he defeated Jose Aguilar by TKO; not answering the bell for the second round. He then was the first pick of the lightweights for Team Mir. Browning was also successful in his quarterfinal match-up with Rolando Delgado, winning by decision after 3 rounds, dropping and nearly finishing Delgado in the second round. While Browning trained with team Mir, he repeatedly stated that other members on the team, namely future opponent Dave Kaplan, refused to train with him due to his intensity during training.

On December 13, 2008, Browning took on fellow Team Mir castmate Dave Kaplan on the main card of The Ultimate Fighter 8 Finale; winning by armbar. Browning and Kaplan both won $25,000 for fight of the night. Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg repeatedly stated how Browning's striking and footwork had improved dramatically since his appearance on The Ultimate Fighter season 8.

Browning's second appearance in the Ultimate Fighting Championship octagon came at UFC Fight Night 18 where he took on Cole Miller. The fight had bad blood before the fight even started, when Miller began talking about Browning's skills in mixed martial arts during an interview held by ufc.com. The day before the fights at the weigh ins, Miller got in the face of Browning, Dana White was forced to pull the two apart. After White pulled them apart, Browning reached over and gave a slight tap on Miller's crotch.

The fight between Browning and Cole Miller ended quickly. After Browning was caught by Miller's straight right punch, he attempted a take down. Miller met the takedown, and clinched Browning's neck in a guillotine choke. Immediately after Miller got the win, he leaned down and yelled in Browning's face, "Who's overrated now?!"
