Photo: Corey Hill Breaks Leg During Bout At UFC: FFOT

by admin on Dec.11, 2008, under Uncategorized

Lastnight during his undercard bout with Dale Hartt, Corey Hill suffered a broken leg when Hartt checked a kick from Hill and at that point Hill’s shin split in two.

The guys from Fight! Magazine were in attendance and were able to catch the exact moment the leg broke in what has to be one of the most grotesque scenes in MMA and that’s saying quite a bit considering Steve Cantwell snapped his opponents arm lastnight as well.

UFC 91: Lesnar Vs. Couture Fight Night Bonuses

by admin on Dec.09, 2008, under Uncategorized

Following last night’s stellar UFC 91 card that took place from Las Vegas and aired live on PPV, the UFC handed out their regular fight night bonuses for KO of the night, Submission of the night, and of course, fight of the night.

Knock out of the night honors went to Jeremy Stephens for what could most likely be considered the biggest uppercut in UFC history when he sent his opponent Rafael dos Anjos flying back to Brazil and then followed it up with a flurry of punches to take the contest and put a stamp on his Brazilian counterpart.

Submission of the night went to Dustin Hazelett for his impression display of Jiu Jitsu and execution of the rubber guard when he tied up Tamden McCrory and submitted him with what looked like a very painful armbar.

Although Brock Lesnar and Randy Couture had a entertaining main event between them that seen Lesnar take the heavyweight title from Couture, the Fight of the Night award went to Jorge Gurgel and Aaron Riley after both fighters went to war for three round. Riley would take the fight via a split decision in what was a back and forth brawl.

For their efforts each fighter received $60,000 to go on top of their base salaries that should be available soon.

Anderson Silva Vs. Chuck Liddell Possible For UFC 95 In London

by admin on Dec.09, 2008, under Uncategorized

The UK based newspaper, The Sun is reporting that the UFC will be making their return to the O2 Arena in London England on February 21st following the success of UFC 85 in June.

The paper is also reporting that UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva has been asked to appear on the card with a possible match up with Chuck Liddell on tap.

This would mark the second time in a year the Middleweight King has moved up in weight to find opponents as the UFC has been having a hard time finding opponents to challenge for the titie at middleweight. Silva has rolled through everyone put in front of him.

In June, Silva moved up to 205lbs to face James Irvin during a special UFC Fight Night on Spike TV and would win that contest with a vicious KO of the “Sandman” in under two minutes of the first round.

Nothing is official at this time but there have been rumors of a possible Silva and Liddell superfight for quite some time and with talks of Silva possibly retiring at the end of his UFC deal, and with the 38 year old Liddell somewhat on his way off the top of the ladder at Light Heavyweight by losing three of his last four fight, now would be as good a time as any to set up the superfight many have been clamouring for.

Sean Sherk Frustrated With Lightweight Title Being Put On Hold

by admin on Dec.09, 2008, under Uncategorized

In a recent interview with Fiveouncesofpain.com’s Sam Caplan, Sean Sherk vents his frustrations with the fact the UFC Lightweight title is now on hold with champ BJ Penn moving in weight to fight Georges St. Pierre for the Welterweight title:

“With 155, it’s one of the most stacked weight classes right now and the unfortunate thing is that there is no one at the top of it defending the belt right now. There are a lot of guys fighting their way up to the top trying to get title shots and then once you get up to the top, you’re like, “Okay, so where’s the champion?”

You don’t even have anyone to fight so it’s kind of frustrating to me and it’s got to be frustrating to other guys because nobody really knows what’s going on right now. It just kind of sucks. I think if you’re going to be a champion for the weight class then you should stay at that weight class and defend the belt. If you go to a different weight class then the belt should be left behind and give somebody else an opportunity to fight for it.”

Sam Caplan: So you’re saying that if B.J. wants to go after the welterweight title currently held by Georges St. Pierre that he should have to relinquish the lightweight title?

Sean Sherk: To be honest with you, if you’re going to be gone 13, 14, or 15 months, I think you should relinquish the belt. There’s a lot of guys right now fighting their way to the top and trying to get that belt. A lot of guys want that number one contender spot. Once you get that number one contender spot, then what? The champion is gone. The champion is fighting at 170 so now when you get up to that number one contender spot you can’t even fight for a belt because the champion is not competing in the weight class anymore.

For me, it’s a hard pill to swallow because I want to be the number one contender; I want to fight for the belt. Okay, but where’s the champion? Kenny wants to fight for the belt. Okay, but where’s the champion? We’ve got no champion to fight so basically we just keep fighting for the number one contender spot. The number one contender spot is pretty much the championship belt, I guess.

With Win Over Penn, GSP Could Fight Anderson Silva

by admin on Dec.09, 2008, under Uncategorized

Dana White on the hype train for UFC 94:

“I think that would cement him as one of the best of all-time…Right now I think Anderson Silva is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world…The winner of BJ Penn and Georges St-Pierre moves right up there. And if Georges wins, he could get a shot at Anderson.

I’m just coming off a promotion where I got done saying it’s the biggest fight in UFC history in terms of most pay-per-view buys…I truly believe this fight has the potential to break that. BJ and Georges are heavyweights when it comes to star power.”

Nate Marquardt Makes Claim For TUF 9 Coaching Position

by admin on Dec.09, 2008, under Uncategorized

With no one official yet for the coaching gig on season 9 of The Ultimate Fighter to handle the duties as the American coach to challenge UK coach Michael Bisping, Nathan Marquardt makes this claim to the spot in a recent interview with Sherdog.com:

“[Michael Bisping and Demian Maia] are good fighters. Bisping can go and go, and Maia is good on the ground. But neither one of them has fought anyone who is as good as me or at the same level of fighter that I am. It would be a huge jump in class for them to fight me, and I think I could finish either one of them off in round one or two…. The desire for a rematch with Anderson Silva is obvious, and it’s a great desire of mine. I really feel like I didn’t fight the way I wanted to fight. I just didn’t show up that night. When I was sticking with my game plan, I was winning the fight. I went away from that, and he took advantage of it. The next time we fight, it will be a war and I can’t wait for the opportunity.”
